CREATING A MORE INCLUSIVE WESTLAND

Diversity, equity, and inclusion for all must be a part of the foundation for our community. We must work together as a city to be inclusive and welcoming to all who wish to call Westland home, visit our city, or open a business here. We must reject hatred and all form of discrimination based on race, color, creed, ethnicity, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, and more.

RESULTS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Created a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board to explore new ideas and programs to make Westland a more inclusive community.

  • Hired a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director to help us become a more welcoming community and diversiy or city's workforce.

  • Recognized June as Pride Month in the City of Westland.

  • Declared Racism as a Public Health Crisis

MY PLAN FOR MAKING WESTLAND MORE WELCOMING

  • ADOPT AN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY RESOLUTION:
I am working to have the Westland City Council adopt an Indigenous People's Day Resolution to honor the Native and Indigenous Americans of Westland past and present. Westland should honor their culture and heritage. As well, we should acknowledge the horrific crimes and violent acts of oppression that were committed against the Native and Indigenous Americans who first called the Westland and Michigan area home before settlers came to the area.
